Fabrication and application of rapidly resilient mechanochromic fibers using cholesteric liquid crystal elastomer

Cholesteric liquid crystal elastomer (CLCE) fibers have gained attention as innovative mechanochromic materials for smart textiles, with potential applications extending across domains such as wearable technology, advanced fashion, and biomedical monitoring. Nevertheless, the intrinsic high hysteresis of CLCE during stress relaxation introduces a temporal delay between sequential stimulus responses, thereby constraining their operational efficiency in practical applications. In response, we have engineered robust, low-hysteresis mechanochromic fibers capable of perceiving rapid deformations within practical levels. These fibers, termed CLCE-SC, feature a sheath-core structure, with a CLCE sheath surrounding a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) core. This design retains the CLCE sheath's exceptional optical properties while significantly enhancing the mechanical strength (100.9 MPa), toughness (2.7×104 MJ m-3), and ultra-fast resilience (160 % strain at 128.3 cm s-1) due to the TPE core. By modulating the TPE core's modulus, we have created mechanochromic fibers with adaptable mechanical properties, broadening the utility of smart textiles from individual fiber responses to dynamically responsive sensory environment.
